Nurse Adam

The Doctor’s Office.

I was getting checked out from being sick recently.
I had been sick off and on for the past three months, and I admit that I was sad about everything I had gone through with my body.

My nurse, “Adam,” had taken my vitals, and it was time to give a urine sample.

“Oh, my bag doesn’t have much pee in it,” I say while showing him the bag.
It’s a clear bag, so the urine can be seen with the naked eye.
With his bare hand, Adam feels my bag and inspects it.

“You don’t have much, do you,” he says while holding the bag and inspecting it. “Well, give me what you got into this cup,” and he hands me the urine sample cup.
I take the cup and start toward the restroom.

I stop and turn toward Adam.
“Thank you,” I say.

“For what, sir?”
“For letting me feel human.”

A smile grows on his face, and he realizes what he has just done, and we communicate without saying anything.
I begin to go into the restroom.

“Mr. Thomas, sir,” Adam says.
I stop and turn, “Yeah?”

“You are human.”

A smile grows on my face.
Again, we communicate without saying a word, and I head into the restroom.
