Visiting Huntsville

—Huntsville—

I had to drive to Huntsville today for a Doctor’s Appointment.
After the appointment was over, I decided to visit where I used to work.

Standing there on the grass, I felt nostalgic.

Much of my life had taken place right where I stood.
Only then, there was a building here. I was standing where my office once stood.
The building got torn down several years ago. I was amazed at how fast the Earth reclaimed the space. Grass was now growing where I once worked. You couldn’t even tell that a building once stood here.

I waved as people drove by.
The people looked at me as if they were wondering whether or not I belonged there. They looked at me as if they were debating on whether to call Security or not.
All the other buildings were still standing and used by a new company.

I had driven through the back gate as if I belonged. I went through that back gate so much of my life that I felt like I did still belong there.
I figured Security would drive up any moment and ask me to leave.
Until then, though, I was going to take in this moment.

There was a time when I would have swore to you that I would work in that building all of my life.
And now, there’s not even any proof that a building once stood here.

“Can I help you, Sir?” A man asks as he gets out of his vehicle.

“Do you remember the building that once stood here?” I ask him.

“Oh, yeah, It was torn down several years back.”

“Well, I worked most of my life right here where I’m standing… ………….Ahem, and I guess it’s time for me to go now. I’m sorry to have bothered you.”

I got in my vehicle and drove out the back gate and back home.
