EMT and Jumper Cables

Noon. The Local Dollar General.

I loaded my Dawg Tommy into my vehicle and headed to Dollar General.
What I needed wouldn’t take long. Just in and out.

I pull into a parking spot, and the Older Lady in the car next to me pops open her hood.
She looks to be in her ’60s and has a little girl with her sitting in the passenger seat.
She messes with the Battery and gets back inside her car to crank it up.
“Click…click…click” is the sound it makes.
She hops back out and looks under the hood some more.

I know nothing about vehicles, and when I get out of my truck, it will look bad if I merely walk by her. However, I notice that an EMT Truck is in the parking lot.
I feel it’s better to come clean and tell the truth in these situations.

I get out of my vehicle.

“Ma’am, I’m not ‘Manly’ at all. I know nothing about vehicles, and for that, I apologize. However, I noticed an EMT Vehicle over there, which means there is an EMT inside the store. So I’ll go inside, find them and see if they can help you. Okay?”

“How sweet. Thank you. It’s the Battery, and I just need a jump.”

“Yes, ma’am. I’ll be right back with some help.”

I walk inside and look for anyone with a handheld two-way radio and an EMT uniform. I see the man in the freezer section.

“Sir, are you an EMT?”

“Yes. What’s wrong?”

“Oh, nothing. I don’t know anything about cars, and there is a lady outside with her Granddaughter, and her car won’t crank. She says she needs her Battery jumped off, and I thought you might be able to help her.”

“I can. Where is she parked?”

“She is in the second spot to the right when you walk out the door.”

“I’m on it.”

“Thank you, Sir.”

“You’re welcome.”

Since I’m parked beside her, I decide to walk outside, too, because the man may need to use my Battery to jump her off. And I was right.

The EMT gets his jumper cables out of his truck, and I pop the hood on my truck.
He hooks up the cables and jumps the lady’s car off.

“Thank you, Sir,” I tell the EMT. “Growing up, while my friends were learning to work on cars, I was having surgeries in the hospital. So, I’m not the manliest man.”

“I think you did fine. You found someone who could help, and that says a lot.”

The lady gets out of her vehicle and thanks both of us.
I wave to her Grandchild, and the Grandma gives me one of the best hugs I’ve had in a long while.
