“Otis.” I decided on “Otis.”
I got up a little after 4:30 am today.
With my Spinal Cord doing its usual thing and shocking the fire out of me, I decided to go for a drive and maybe grab a drink at the gas station.
I decided to let “Tommy the Dawg” sleep and go by myself.
After pulling into my parking spot at the gas station, parking, and getting out, a dog runs over to me. He runs to me like he’d been waiting all his life for me. He was shaking and scared.
He quickly wrapped his paws around my legs and laid his head in my lap even though I was standing up. It was like a hug.
I pet the dog and take some pictures to post on social sites to try and find its owner.
“He’s lost,” I think to myself.
I give the “Sit” command, and he sits.
He then lays on his back and wants me to scratch his belly, which I promptly do.
I begin to go inside the store, and he acts like he wants to follow. I give him the “No” command and enter the store.
“That’s a great dog,” I say to the two attendants. “Someone is surely missing him.”
They respond, “Someone pulled up at midnight, threw the dog out, and drove off.”
My mouth drops.
“No. really?”
“Yes. Really.”
“But he’s so well-mannered,” I say back.
“We know. We’ve been going outside to play with him. We’re hoping someone will get him. He needs a good home.”
Let me tell you this now before going any further:
I’ve never brought home a “Stray.”
That was the job of my late brother.
Me though? Nope.
Every dog I’ve owned got to me some other way. I’ve never brought home a stray that I found wandering around at a gas station.
“Let me go home and talk it over,” I say back, and I leave.
Then, without talking it over with anyone, I go back.
I find him about to cross Highway 160, a highway I’ve posted about; it’s dangerous.
I stop my truck and get the dog and head home with him.
There’s a first time for everything, right?
I’ve posted pictures on social sites and placed flyers at the local gas stations just in case someone is looking for him.
For now, I’ve bathed him and given his name.
Time will tell whether it’s a temporary name or permanent.
That’s all for now,
Love you,
–Lynn
