—Strange Date—
As a teenager, I dated very little.
I knew my health problems and knew my limitations.
Also, I didn’t feel that I was supposed to marry anyone. And, if you’re not getting married, why date?
I did go out on a few dates, though.
I took one date, “Kim,” to see “The Silence of The Lambs.”
“Anaconda” was a movie that I took “Lisa” on.
Then came “Shirley.” “Shirl” for short.
“Shirl” was quite possibly the weirdest date I’ve ever been on. If it was a date, that is. It lasted about 35 Minutes.
Our date was going to be a typical date—dinner and a movie. I don’t remember the name of the film.
I met her at a parking lot to pick her up for our date.
She hopped into my vehicle, and I began driving down Highway 31 toward the restaurant. We were almost there when she hollers, “I gotta go back to my car! Take me back now, please.”
It was like she received a text message saying, “I saw him on America’s Most Wanted!”
And this was during a time when people didn’t have cell phones, let alone send text messages.
Yet, it was like someone had signaled to her that I was a serial killer.
I thought of it like this: I wore a diaper at this time in my life. I didn’t tell anyone, and I’d have to make a quick exit from time to time.
I’ve climbed out of Bathroom Windows and walked home on more than one occasion.
And here she is acting like me…
Without asking questions, I turned around and took her back to her car.
She got out of my vehicle and into hers. Then, she cranked up her vehicle and left.
After that, she told me over the phone that it wasn’t going to work out between us.
I was okay with that. After all, we hadn’t even gone out on a date yet. At least, I don’t think you’d call that a date.
The next time I did see her was at Wal-Mart. It was over a year later, and She was with her husband.
We said “Hey” to one another, and she introduced me to her new husband.
“Better him than me,” I thought to myself.
I didn’t bring up our date. I did decide to count it as a date, though. I have to make my numbers look as good as possible.
To this day, though, I wonder what that was all about.
