Birth Of A Calf

—Coming Into The World—A Calf’s Story—
—A Child In Awe & A Perfect Day—

I’ve been in a Reminiscing Mood for the past few days.
One Story keeps sticking out in my mind.
I was in my Twenties, which means this happened over Twenty Years ago.

My late Brother “Tony,” had one child at that time.
I always called the kid “Tony’s Child” or “Kid.” Maybe even ” Tony’s Son.” —At least for this Story.—

We were driving back to the house one evening; The sun was setting as we passed Cow Pasteur after Cow Pasteur. Pink Floyd and Queensryche had played much of that day.
It wasn’t hot out. It felt cool.
The Skies were Cloudy and Blue.
Darkness would set in very soon, though.

As we were passing one Cow Pasteur, Tony saw something. —A Cow in Distress is the best way for me to describe it.
Tony pointed it out, pulled off the road, and parked. We all hopped out.
We leaned back against Tony’s car and watched the Cow in the Pasteur across from us. Tony’s son held his Daddy’s Hand.

The Cow, whom I’ll now call the “Heffer,” was about to give birth.

Our eyes widened. Our mouths opened. No one made a sound.
Finally, the son asks, “What is that Cow doing, ‘Daddy?'”

“She’s giving Birth to a Baby,” Tony replies.

I then speak up: “Shouldn’t that Heffer be lying down to give birth?”
“I guess not,” Tony says.

The Heffer was facing away from us, and her backend was looking right at us. We were in the perfect spot; and at the perfect time. God’s timing is always perfect.

I was trying to wrap my mind around what we were seeing.
Two feet were sticking out of the Heffers’ backend.
It felt like an eternity before the next thing happened: The Calf’s head came through the opening.
Tony’s son looked in Amazement, Wonder, and Awe.
Tony and I looked at his son in Amazement, Wonder, and Awe.
“That’s a Baby being born,” Tony says. “You were born something like that not too long ago,” He adds.

“She better hurry up. It’s gonna be dark soon,” I say.

“Let’s watch the whole thing ‘Daddy.'”
“Okay,” he replies.

The body of the Calf begins coming out.
The farther out the body comes, the more the body twists and bends toward the ground.
Finally, the backend of the Calf—legs and all— fell to the ground. A Calf had been born. —and nightfall was coming.
“Let’s not leave yet, ‘Daddy,'”
“Don’t worry. We won’t,” Tony said, still holding his Kid’s hand.

“She’s gonna clean the Calf up now, I bet. Lick the slime off of her baby’s body,” I say. —I say dumb stuff like that a lot.— But that is what happened. The Heffer began cleaning her Calf up.

We wanted to stay until the Calf stood up for the first time, but it was getting darker and darker by the minute. So, we got back into the car; Cranked up to leave. We didn’t even turn the radio back on.
We drove in silence.

I was in Awe of what we had just witnessed, as was Tony and his Child.

As we pull into the driveway and park, someone finally speaks up:
Tony’s son asks, “Did that Cow come outta that other Cow’s Butt?”
