—Stop #3—
—Abes BBQ—
My day had started at 5 am.
We had driven over Four Hours and visited the Grave of Blues Legend “Robert Johnson” in Greenwood, Mississippi, and were now at “The Crossroads” in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and I was hungry for lunch.
Abraham “Abe” Davis started his first business, “The Bungalow-Inn,” in 1924, where his reputation for great BBQ began.
It was originally located on what is now Martin Luther King Boulevard in Clarksdale, Mississippi. It was later moved to “The Crossroads” in Clarksdale and renamed “Abes.”
In we walked.
The place is your quintessential BBQ Joint.
Awards are on the walls, as well as “Write-Ups” done by Magazines and Newspapers. Pictures are also on the walls, and if you look in the right spot, you’ll see a picture of the Great “Morgan Freeman” with his lovely Wife. They are no Strangers to Abe’s or Clarksdale. More on Mr. Freeman in another post.
We sit down at a booth.
A local man walks around talking to all the guests.
He’s an older white man, about Six-Feet tall, two-hundred pounds, and has white hair with a Big Cigar hanging from his lips. He wears a Gold ring, Gold Bracelet, and Watch.
He looks and acts like he has more than one Girl Friend. And you know what? I imagine his Girl Friends all know about one another.
See how I come up with “Back Stories” for the people I meet?
He talks to us. We laugh and “Cut Up” a bit.
He also gives us a few destinations to check out while in the area.
Our Waitress stood behind him, waiting on him to move so she could take our order. You could tell he was a regular at Abe’s.
And I’ll tell you; he was quite a Character. He bids us farewell and moves on.
I knew what I wanted and didn’t need a menu.
There was a picture of it on the cover of a Magazine hanging on the wall. So I pointed to the picture and said, “I want that, please, with Fries, BBQ Baked Beans, and Sweet Tea with Lemon.”
(I’ll include a picture of the Magazine Cover with a Photo of the Sandwich I got. They looked about the same.)
It was the BBQ Pork Sandwich – “Abe” Sized.
“Abe Sized” is their version of “Large” or “Super-Sized,” and you can get any Sandwich “Abe.”
I finished my “Sammich” and tried some of Dad’s Ribs. The ribs were “fall off the bone” good.
We finished our lunch and paid our bill.
Our last stop for the day was visiting a Blues Club.
Not just any Blues Club, though. One that’s been voted “Best Blues Club in America” and is well known.
Last stop? “Ground Zero.” Owned by the famous “Morgan Freeman.”
