We feel that they are one of us. On our side. Our Neighbor. Our Friend. Our Family.
One of our Local News Anchors passed away today.
From childhood until his retirement in 2014, “Scott Richards” of WBRC 6 News was one of my favorite news anchors. He started in 1981 when I was six years old.
His voice was soothing to me when I watched him on the TV.
It was also somewhat commanding—two great qualities in a voice for a News Anchor.
I felt he was telling me the facts and nothing more.
I remember watching him when AIDS was discovered.
The whole Country was scared.
Nobody wanted to drink out of water fountains. It was a scary time.
They had said that anyone who had received a Blood Transfusion was at risk. And with my Spina Bifida and a few surgeries under my belt, I had received Blood. I was scared.
Mr. Richards calmed me down.
I remember watching him during a Plane Hijacking. I don’t remember the specifics or which one; I remember Mr. Richards reporting the story sincerely.
I also remember him reporting fun stories. Stories that made you smile or laugh. You could tell that he loved reporting those stories. You could feel his kindness and knew that he had a big heart.
He took his job seriously. He knew that we were depending on him, and he always delivered. He always kept us informed. He was on our side—He will be missed.
