Subconsciously

—Subconsciously—

Yesterday, I drove over to my Hometown of Fultondale, Alabama.

I went over to Fulton Road. (I think that’s the name of the road)
When I was young and was driving, we had a game we’d play on Fulton Road. We would try to Coast in Neutral from the top of the road down to the Stop Sign at the bottom.
I think It’s over a mile long, and there are a few hills that you have to go up and over, but we’d try to Coast to the bottom.

I then drove by the old house on Leora Avenue.

I also texted my Nephew and wished him a Happy Birthday.

Today, I went to Gardendale, the neighboring city to Fultondale, and bought some sandwiches from “Pasquales Pizza.”
Growing up, it was a treat to go to Pasquales Pizza. So, we mostly went after playing ball at the park or swimming at the City Swimming Pool.

The place is still the same. The Arcade Games look to be the same games I played as a kid.

Pasquale’s Pizza is a real Pizza joint, in my opinion.
You get “Chain” pizzas from those “Chain Pizza Stores” and authentic Pizza from Pasquales. That’s my opinion.
They have the best Stromboli Steak Sandwich period.
My late brother could make a good Stromboli Steak Sandwich too.
But other than Pasquale’s and my brother, nobody has a good Stromboli Steak Sandwich.

I got two Stromboli Steaks and two Hoagies to go. I also ordered two gravies on the side for dipping my Steak Sandwich.
I had a large Diet Coke while I waited.

I called and told Mom that I was on my way home with the food.
We planned to eat on the Front Porch.

I walked in.
Mom was walking toward me.
I said something, and mom teared up.
—Then it hit me.
Yesterday was “Tony’s” Birthday. He’d be Fifty if he were still living.
The big 50… —5-0.
We probably would have had a Birthday Party for him if he were still alive.

My last two days… —Yesterday and Today… —I’d driven down to my hometown and visited all the areas we played. Subconsciously, I guess…
How did I not know that?
I even got food from one of our favorite places.

That’s the thing about losing someone you truly loved.
Even Subconsciously, you do things like I did for my last two days.

We sat on the Front Porch, ate our Stromboli Steak Sandwiches, and talked about Tony.
